EIGHT cyclists are to set off next Thursday on a gruelling European trek to raise cash for Marina Dalglish’s cancer charity.

Mark Whitwood and friends will cycle a football-themed 1000 miles from Barcelona to Anfield, ending the 10-day trek at the Shankly gates.

En route, the team will pick up signed shirts from major teams that will be auctioned off at a charity ball at Anfield.

Mr Whitwood, from Maghull, said he decided to organise the ride because his fiancee’s dad died from cancer three years ago.

He said: “We’ve raised £7,000 and our target is £25,000.

“All the team is really excited, but nervous too,” he added.

We are delighted that The Marina Dalglish Appeal has reached its original target of £1.5m and that the centre for Oncology at University Hospital, Aintree, opened on 4th June 2007... It is through your continued support and generous contributions that we have been able to achieve our goal.

We have now set ourselves a new and exciting challenge in conjunction with Clatterbridge Centre for Oncology to help build a much needed Radiotherapy Centre in University Hospital Aintree, bringing the treatment closer to the patients.

Kenny and myself have been constantly amazed at how much time, effort and money you have all been willing to donate, and we realize that nothing would be possible without your help. Thank you all very much and hopefully together we can achieve our new goal!
